"Narnia"
First time producing a show in this facilities black box space, new lighting grid, lots of discovories with capabilities of the space.
Design concept behind Narnia is that the magical world is all made up inside their attic, using every day items found in a dusty old room to create key locations, like the curtain rod becoming the war camp tent, a trunk is the stone table Aslan dies on, boxes and crates become a castle and throne, a coat rack gets dressed with green jacket to serve as trees.
It is winter in Narnia and summer in our world. this story element is told through the paint and lighting. using the light dusty attic color to extend onto the floor play space as snow. the set pieces and wood grain get warmer the closer we get to the widows and door in the attic. Spacing between slats in the walls allows for unique lighting color throw from behind.
The door and window shapes as well as the trunk styles aid in conveying time period (1940s).
- personal favorite set piece is the small half window DSR tucked at the bottom of the attic wall to convey the height of the room were in.
Closing weekend there was an unfortunate fire on campus and performances had to be canceled ! so the whole team got together to put on the show for friends and family outside in the school courtyard. a glorious moment of team work and love of the arts. It was heart warming to see so many people come out to support this program in a less than ideal situation.
